SNI-2.JPGDuring the week of October 26, 2008, news continued out of Israel of the first lay-offs resulting from the turning economy. While companies such as AmDocs and Delver announced cut people, Check Point asserted that though its customers were being affected by the economy, the information security company wasn’t at the moment impacted enough by it to need to let go of any of its employees. The threat of Israel’s universities not opening this year was solved when Olmert ordered a NIS 515 million budget hike. Of course, this wasn’t the only news coming out of Israel this past week. promisec_logo.JPGOver the past year, Promisec Ltd., an internal network security solutions company with an office in Israel, has been using YouTube as a tool to explain the benefits and features of its products and the simplicity of how to use them. It’s latest promotional video, “Ask Yourself These Questions,” successfully caught my attention because of the important security questions regarding laptops, PCs and servers it brings up at the beginning of the video that every network manager should ask himself or herself and know the answers to.

Some of the questions asked include:
1. Could someone be running any file sharing applications?
2. Has any user attached an unauthorized external storage device?
3. Does every endpoint and server have the latest SP or hot fix?
4. Will I face IT and Security budget cuts that will limit visibility to new threats?

Check it out:

Promisec also offers a free Internal Threat Encyclopedia reference guide on its website that is worth taking a look at.

SNI-2.JPGThe week of October 12th was surprisingly busy in Israel. Talk of how Israeli universities and colleges might not open this year due to funding continued, while a serious solution to the recent “brain drain” problem was proposed. Though darker days are still ahead for the U.S. and global economies and VCs and others are warning startups and entrepreneurs that they will have to do more with less, if any, funding, money is still out there for strong companies, such as Wix.com and MyThings.com. commtouch_logoCommtouch, an information security company based in Israel, announced yesterday the release of its Q3 Email Threats Trends Report and the report’s emphasis on the latest threat of spammers hiding their reputations. According to Amir Lev, CTO of Commtouch,

“The growing trend is for spammers to adopt the good reputation built up by other sites and senders in order to bypass reputation-based email filters. They accomplish this in a number of ways, including stealing legitimate email senders’ credentials, or compromising email account enrollment processes and automatically registering thousands of free email accounts.”

Other highlights of the report include:

– “Spam levels throughout the third quarter averaged 77%, as in the previous quarter, ranging from a low of 61% to a peak of 94% of all email

– Over half of zombies/bots change their IP address daily

– Malware masqueraded as legitimate newsletters such as CNN Daily Top 10 or IE7 Browser updates

– New spam tactics during the quarter included: links to Flash (.swf) files, ASCII art spam, and hidden Bayesian poisoning text combined with HTML tricks.”

Commtouch’s main product is its Zero-Hour software based on the company’s Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD) technology that searches for recurring patterns and indicates spam that way. Other Israeli security companies besides Commtouch include, Check Point, PineApp, Sentrigo and Aladdin, among many others.

Commtouch was featured in depth on Israel Innovation 2.0 in October 2007 and has increasingly become a significant Israeli company to watch in IT.

SNI-2.JPGThough there wasn’t a lot of technology news coming from Israel during the week of September 28, 2008, the cleantech industry received a significant amount of the coverage that it did receive. The big news in the industry was that the future of cleantech is still promising and that the climate does impact cleantech investment. Widget company, Gigya raised funds and much of SanDisk’s value has to do with MSystems, Ltd. optier_logoLast week, OpTier, an Israeli business transaction management software company, announced that it had successfully raised $63 million in its latest round of funding to focus on its product line and market expansion. While $63 million in funds raised is impressive at any time, it is especially impressive now given the unstable global economy and the impact it is likely to have on Israel’s economy in the next year.

This was fourth-round funding though, so presumably OpTier is established enough and has a viable enough plan to improve its product and expand its market share that investing such an amount is much less of a gamble for investors compared to an investment of $4-7 million in a seed or early stage startup seeking funding.

OpTier’s product, CoreFirst, does seem to be a winner. Written off in its first few years as unlikely to stand a chance against competition from companies such as BMC Software, Computer Associates, HP, IBM and Mercury Interactive, OpTier has become one of the leaders with CoreFirst being identified by Forrester Research as bringing Business Transaction Management (BTM) to Business Service Management (BSM).

According to the company website,

“Based on unique Active Context Tracking™ (ACT) technology, our CoreFirst® product assures that business transactions flow smoothly within IT applications and infrastructure, without bottlenecks or outages, for improved end-user experience and reduced cost.”

The latest version of CoreFirst, CoreFirst 3.0, was unveiled earlier this month and promises enterprises the ability to deploy it in even the most complex of IT environments to link business and IT so that transactions flow smoothly through the IT infrastructure, ensuring that services remain uninterrupted and business goals are met. CoreFirst 3.0 now also supports the Microsoft Application Framework (.Net).

Some of its features include:

  • “Built-in real time ability to continually benchmark business transactions performance across tiers and provide alerts when SLAs are breached.
  • Full recording of every business transaction executed in any system it monitors, so you can easily track every transaction’s execution throughout customer facing systems, backend supporting systems, and shared services environments, pointing out how much time was spent at each stop and how many resources were consumed.”

Plans for this round of funding were first announced in May shortly after B-hives was acquired by VMWare and OpTier noted that the market is consolidating. Whether or not the economy will impact OpTier’s vision or abilities for acquisitions should be seen probably in the next few months.
